This wonderful Albanian word!

“Mikpritje” comes from two words: mik + pritje — literally, welcoming a friend and receiving. It’s a little different from “mirëpritje,” which simply means welcome.

For Albanians, mikpritja has always meant much more than a greeting or offering someone something.

A guest was welcomed with the door open, the table set, and whatever the household had to offer. It was never about how much you had, but how much heart you put into what you shared.

A coffee, a glass of raki, a plate of food, a long conversation. Simple things that expressed respect, warmth, and closeness.

Hospitality could also mean listening, helping, sharing stories, and, of course, a good dose of humor.

From north to south, mikpritja is one of those values passed down from generation to generation and it remains an essential part of the Albanian way of welcoming others.
