At the meeting point of the Buna, Drin, and Kir rivers, Rozafa Castle rises with quiet strength. Resting on a rocky hill above Shkodër, it has watched over the city for centuries — not just as a fortress, but as the keeper of one of Albania’s most powerful legends.
According to local lore, three brothers built the castle, but each night the walls mysteriously crumbled. They were told that only a living sacrifice could hold the walls in place — the wife who brought them lunch the next day would be chosen. Only the youngest brother kept his word. His wife, Rozafa, came carrying food and her baby.
She didn’t beg or protest. She simply asked:
“If I must be walled in, let one eye remain to see my child,
one hand to caress him,
one breast to feed him,
and one foot to rock his cradle.”
From the moment of her sacrifice, the castle stood strong — and still does to this day.
For the people of Shkodër, Rozafa is more than a story.
She is the spirit of the city — a symbol of love, sacrifice, and unshakable strength. Her legend reminds us that great things endure not because they are built, but because someone gave everything to make them last.
Rozafa lives on in the stones of the castle and in the heart of every Shkodran.
